Save Money on Moving Supplies

Moving can prove to be quite costly because not only would you have to rent a truck to move your things, you would also need to secure all the equipment and furniture that you have by packing them properly, thus you would have to spend on moving supplies as well. Saving money on moving supplies is never easy which is why you need to plan your move carefully. You can actually avoid these costs by getting if not some, then most of your packing supplies for free.

Go for recycled boxes rather than buying them for about $2 a piece.  You can often get used boxes from a local supermarket and other retail stores in your area. All you need to do is ask an employee of the store in advance for the details of their delivery schedule and express your plan of asking the management for their boxes. By doing so, you can go to the stores right after their delivery schedule just before they cut up the boxes to be sent to the recycling facility. Ask friends and relatives who have just recently moved because they just might have kept some of their packing supplies. You can also take a trip to your office’s copy room and ask if they have paper boxes to spare.

When moving, you can use old sheets, blankets or towels as padding for your breakable items or to wrap up your electronics. Use old newspapers to wrap up plates and other glassware instead of buying packaging paper or bubble wraps. However, take note that newspaper could possibly stain your chinaware and crystals so you might want to make an exception for those and just purchase packaging paper.

Do not rely on just the recommendations of your friends and loved ones when you talk about moving supplies. It is best to know what you need in advance so will you have the time to source it out. Packing at the last minute is not an option. Doing so will guarantee that you end up spending too much on your moving supplies. You also need to plan how you will pack your things. Do not just stack them randomly in boxes because you would want to maximize the spaces in every box as possible.

Determine which item goes where and decide on what moving supplies you would really need. Heavy items would need heavy tie-downs, smaller items can be grouped in moving boxes and the fragile items would need to be wrapped in paper. Consider the size of boxes that you would need as well and the type of tapes you would use for every box. Once you have determined what you need, you can purchase some of your moving supplies from discount moving stores online or at local stores, especially for the ones that you really value because used boxes could possibly break during the move as they have already been exposed to moisture and mites.
